Lexicon

By request: a compilation of the words I use.

Lexicon

Lexicon

Noun:  the vocabulary of a person, language or branch of knowledge; a dictionary; in linguistics:  the complete set of meaningful units in a language.

I like this word enough that I think it should have its own page, especially since the blog bears lexicon as its title.  The word vocabulary is more often used to describe the same thing, a language’s or person’s set of words.  Lexicon can be traced to the Greek for word and ultimately to the the Greek legein, or speak.  Likewise, vocabulary can be traced to the Latin vocare, or call.  So a lexicon or vocabulary is based not necessarily on written words, but the spoken language we use to communicate with each other.  A larger lexicon between people allows for the possibility of both more broad and precise communication.  I hope that those of you who follow this blog will expand your lexicons and maybe also have richer dialogues.
